Abdelaziz Bouteflika served four consecutive terms as the President of Algeria from 1999 to 2019. Bouteflika had earlier served in the military branch of the National Liberation Front during the Algerian War, which resulted in the independence of Algeria from France. From 1963 to 1979 he served as the Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs before becoming the President of the United Nations General Assembly from 1974 to 1975. A controversial figure, Bouteflika resigned as the Algerian President in 2019 following months of protests opposing him standing for a fifth term. Amongst the multiple honours bestowed upon him, Bouteflika was awarded with the Olympic Order in Gold in 2004.
