Si Mohamed Baghdadi began his career as a track and field athlete before becoming a senior figure in sports administration in Algeria. Baghdadi was a good middle-distance runner and won national titles in the 400 metres (1967), 800 metres (1963, 1967, 1968), and 1500 metres (1966). He then became the President of the Algerian Athletics Federation, before becoming the President of the Algerian National Olympic Committee. For his service to sport in Algeria he was awarded with the Olympic Order in Silver in 1984.
