Biography

Andreas “Res” Brügger had been Swiss shot put champion in 1955 but he became mostly known for his role as the head of the Zürich Weltklasse meet, one of track & field’s top one-day annual invitationals. Brügger’s career was as a director with Schweizerische Rückversicherungs-Gesellschaft (Swiss Re), which brought him to Zürich. Once there he became vice-chairman of the athletics club LCZ, and in that role stepped in to help when the Weltklasse was in trouble in the late 1960s. In 1970 he was named chairman of LCZ and in 1973, he took over as director of the Weltklasse, a role he held through 2000.

Some of his accomplishments with the meet were to establish the Verein für Grossveranstaltungen (VfG) in 1983, the supporting association for the meeting. Brügger was also instrumental in getting the Zürich City Council to expand the track at Letzigrund Stadium to eight lanes, from six. For his efforts in support of athletics, Brügger was named Honorary President and an Honorary Member of LCZ and Swiss Athletics. He was awarded a medal for merit and a sports award by the City of Zürich, and Seb Coe, President of the IAAF, gave him the IAAF President’s Award.
