Biography

Jukka Uunila was a sports administrator who held high profile roles in both the Finnish Sports Association (SUL) and the Finnish Olympic Committee (SOK). Uunila initially competed in track and field athletics, specialising in the 400 metres hurdles, but soon moved to coaching when his competitive career was cut short. In 1951 he was only 27-years-old when he was elected to the board of the Finnish Sports Association. By 1965 he had become the chair of the SUL and the vice-chair of the Finnish Olympic Committee. Uunila then served as the chair of the SOK from 1969 until 1984, which overlapped with another spell of chairing the SUL from 1982 to 1993. He was bestowed with multiple honours for his dedication to sport in his country including being awarded with the Great Meritorious Cross of Finnish Sports in 1983.
