Mahmoud Ahmad Ali was a key figure in Egyptian sports for more than 40 years, holding several senior positions during his long career. From 1996 to 2000 Ali was the President of the Egyptian Basketball Federation, with him being appointed for a further year from 2003 to 2004 before winning the General Assembly elections from 2004 to 2012. From 2009 to 2013 he also served as the President of the National Olympic Committee of Egypt.
