Biography

When Yugoslavia hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, the nation had yet to win its first Olympic medal at the Winter Games. It was hoped that Jure Franko could end that drought. Yugoslavia’s flagbearer, he had achieved two podium spots in World Cup races earlier in the season. After the first run, Franko was back in fourth place, but he won the second run to move up to second place behind Max Julen and take the silver medal. This would be the highlight of Franko’s career. He closed the season in 19th position in the Overall World Cup - a career best - and retired in 1985.
