Born on a horse ranch founded by his father, Takeshi Shirai starting riding when he was three years old. Shirai was 17 when he went to France to study and he was selected to represent Japan in equestrian jumping at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics just two years later. At the Atlanta Games he finished 15th overall in the qualifying round of the individual competition but did not contest the final. Four years later he competed at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, finishing 48th in the qualifying round. Shirai also represented Japan at the World Championships in 1998 and 2002.
