Lőrinc Jankovich

Lőrinc Jankovich’s father worked as a farm bailiff in Mezőhegyes, so he likely grew up with horses. Jankovich chose a military career and served in the 2nd Hussar Regiment in Cegléd. From 1934 he was a student of the Royal Hungarian Riding Teacher Training School in Örkénytábor.

At the 1936 Berlin Olympics, Jankovich placed ninth in individual eventing, although the team did not finish due to an injury to another rider’s horse. In 1939 Jankovich won the Hungarian Championship in eventing.

Between 1940 and 1942 Jankovich was a riding teacher at the Riding and Driving Teacher Training School and then fought on the Eastern Front. After returning home, he became a riding teacher again and was the leader of the Olympic team. In 1945, he became commander of the Hussar Squadron and was captured by the Americans in Bavaria, after which he returned to Hungary in 1946. After the war, Jankovich finally settled in Satu Mare, Romania and lived there until his death.
