Biography

Susan DeMattei was a mountain biker who won a bronze medal in the first Olympic mountain bike event at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. She started cycling while at Cal State Chico, where she studied nursing. She started on the roads but then turned to mountain biking. From 1990-96 she was in the top three in the NORBA Championship Series, except for one year. She also won a silver medal in cross-country at the 1994 World Championships.

DeMattei married Dave Wiens, a former professional mountain biker. They settled in Colorado, where she worked as a surgical nurse. DeMattei was inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame in 1997 and into the United States Bicycling Hall of Fame in 2012.
