From the late 1950s until the early 1960s Argentine cyclist Héctor Acosta competed in both road and track events. In 1957 Acosta became the Argentine road race champion, earning himself a place on the national team. Two years later he won gold in the team road race and bronze in the 4,000 metres team pursuit at the Pan American Games in Chicago. He continued his good international record with a fifth-place in the 4,000 metres team pursuit at the 1960 Roma Olympics, before winning silver in the same event at the 1963 Pan American Games in São Paulo. Acosta made his second appearance at the Olympics one year later where he just missed out on a medal after finishing fourth in the 100 kilometres team time trial.
