Biography

The tall Marcello Bartalini was part of the strong Italian road team pursuit team that won the Olympic gold in Los Angeles. Using carbon fibre lenticular wheels, introduced by Francesco Moser, they averaged 50.647 km/h and finished with a 4-minute advantage over Switzerland, in spite of Eros Poli getting a puncture at the 15th km, which forced the others to lose half a minute while waiting for him. Bartalini, the comedian in the group who liked to entertain with jokes and imitations, especially of Moser, was often scolded by his team-mates in competition because he would be overcome with enthusiasm and proceed in a zigzag fashion. In 1985 he won the World Championship bronze along with Poli, Vandelli and Massimo Podenzana. Bartalini had a short and unsuccessful pro career for two seasons, 1988 and 1989. In honor of his sporting achievements, Bartalini was awarded a Gold Medal by the Italian Olympic Committee.
