Colombian cyclist Roberto Buitrago enjoyed success in both his home country and in Guatemala. In 1957 Buitrago won his first stage of the Vuelta a Colombia, a race in which he would go on to have much of his cycling success. One year later he won the second and third stages of the Vuelta a Guatemala, ultimately finishing third overall in the general classification, along with winning the King of the Mountains classification. In 1960 he won two stages of the Vuelta a Colombia in addition to finishing second in the overall race classification. These performances earned Buitrago a place on the Olympic team, where he finished 16th in the 100 kilometres team time trial at the Roma Games.
Buitrago won another stage of the Vuelta a Colombia in 1961, this time finishing the race in third place. One year later he won silver in the team road race at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Kingston, Jamaica. He capped off his career with three stage wins at that years’ Vuelta a Colombia, in addition to winning the general classification of the race.
