Albert Calvert started cycling competitively in 1904 and won the Salford Harriers quarter-mile handicap race at Belle Vue in his first season. He developed his cycling skills on the cinder track at the Preston Pleasure Gardens, and was a member of Preston West End CC most of his career, although he did also ride for Salford Harriers. At the start of his Olympic year, 1908, Calvert was still competing in handicap races, but leading up to the Games had shown so much improvement that he was selected for the 5,000 metres. It was after the Olympics, however, that Calvert enjoyed the most successful part of his career, winning the Northern one-mile title, and in 1910 the quarter-mile and half-mile titles at the AAA Cycling Championship at Herne Hill. Sadly, Calvert died in his early-30s in 1919
