Albert Hawkins

Albert Hawkins was a member of his hometown Powell’s Tillery Gymnastics Club based in Abertillery in the 1900s at which time he competed in various team and individual events through Wales. The highlight of his gymnastics career, however, would come in 1908 when he was chosen along with fellow clubmates Edgar Watkins, William Cowhig and George Meade to participate in the Olympic games held in London. He was one of 45 British gymnasts who competed in the team all-around event, placing eighth with a score of 196 points.

The son of a coal miner, Robert Hawkins, Albert Hawkins also followed in his father’s profession and was a lifelong resident of Monmouthshire until his death in 1969.
