In both 1927 and 1928 Julien Chaerels finished second at the Belgian national road race championships. His consistent results earned Chaerels a place on the Olympic team for the 1928 Games in Amsterdam. He finished 24th in the individual road race, almost 30 minutes behind the race winner, and fifth in the combined team event.
