Lucien Didier

In 1968 cyclist Lucien Didier won the junior road race at the Luxembourg national championship before becoming the national amateur champion four years later. That same year Didier competed in the road race at the München Olympics, where he finished 56th in the main peloton of riders. He followed this with three consecutive victories at the Grand Prix François Faber one-day race from 1973 to 1975, before riding in the road race at the 1976 Montréal Olympics.

One year later Didier turned professional, dominating the national road race event by winning it four consecutive times from 1977 to 1980. In 1979 he was named as the Luxembourg Sportsperson of the Year. From 1978 to 1984 he rode in six editions of the Tour de France, only missing out in 1980, and finishing all the races he started. Riding as a domestique, he helped his team leaders Bernard Hinault and Laurent Fignon to win four and two Tour titles, respectively. Didier also had success at the Giro d’Italia, winning a team time trial stage in 1982. One year before his retirement he won the overall classification at the 1983 Tour of Luxembourg. His son Laurent was also a cyclist who competed at the 2012 London Olympics.
