Biography

Imre Furmen started his sports career as a boxer, then turned to cycling, and also played ice hockey for a short time. From 1948 he was with Partizan SC and two years later moved to Bp. Honvéd. At the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, he was a member of the Hungarian pursuit team and raced the tandem sprint with István Schillerwein.

At the 1954 World University Championships, Furmen won a gold medal in team pursuit and placed fourth in the sprint. After the 1956 revolution he went to Paris to compete with Richard Bicskey and they returned in April 1957, and thus both missed the 1956 Olympics. He could not compete at the 1960 Roma Olympics either, due to a disagreement with one of the team leaders, after which he was expelled from the national team.

From 1957, Furmen raced for Tipográfia SC and then a year later joined FTC. At the 1958 European Championships, he won a silver medal in team pursuit. During his career, he won a total of 13 Hungarian championship titles, and in 1952 helped set a national record in team pursuit.

In the last years of his career as an athlete, Furmen obtained a qualification in metal cutting, and when he retired from sport in 1962, he worked in that profession. About this time he starting racing automobiles, where he achieved further success.
