During the late 1920s and early 1930s Jurgis Gedminas was the best cyclist in Lithuania, winning multiple national titles. Gedminas won his first title in 1929 with victory in the 110 kilometre race. He then focused on track events, dominating sprint races for the next few years. In 1930 he won the 100, 200, and 500 metres, before winning all five sprint events in 1931. The next two years saw him win a further seven events to make him a 16-time national champion. One year before his winning streak began Gedminas also competed in the individual road race at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, finishing more than one hour behind the race winner in 55th place.
