Biography

At the Mexico Olympics in 1968, East German cyclist Dieter Grabe participated in the 100-kilometer team time trial, finishing 13th. Unfortunately, team-mate Axel Peschel had a tyre problem after eight kilometers, which hindered the team’s chances.

Grabe started cycling in 1963, and in 1966 he won his first races: The Around Dresden Race, the Berlin Stage Race and the Tour de GDR. In the latter, he finished third in 1967, and regained the title the following year. He was also the East German road race champion in 1967. Grabe trained as a metal worker, and eventually worked for the East German Railway Company. From the beginning of the 1980s to 1991, he was involved in the management of the football club, 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig. After German re-unification, Grabe returned to the then-renamed German Railway Company.
