In 1959 French cyclist François Hamon was part of the quartet that won the national team time trial title, earning himself a place on the Olympic team. At the 1960 Games in Roma, Hamon finished 15th in the individual road race, only 20 seconds behind the race winner, in addition to placing seventh in the 100 kilometres team time trial. After the Olympics he then won several amateur races in Brittany before turning professional in 1963. The following year he finished 15th in the Paris-Nice stage race before riding that years’ edition of the Tour de France. Hamon continued to win races in France, along with the third stage at the 1965 Tour de Romandie in Switzerland.
