Biography

The most prominent tournament where Matti Herronen competed was the 1960 Olympic Games, where he was 60th in the individual road race and 20th in the team time trial for Finland. During his career, Herronen won the 1960 Tour of Norway, was fifth in a German criterium race in 1956 and took part of the 1957 Peace Race. Herronen never won an individual Finnish title, but was a Finnish 100 km team time trial champion in 1958-60. At the Finnish Championships he also won six silvers– individual road race in 1958-59, kilometre time trial in 1956, team pursuit in 1960-61, and team time trial in 1962 – and four bronzes – individual pursuit in 1955, team pursuit in 1956/59, and team time trial in 1961. After finishing his cycling career, Herronen worked as a cycling coach and was also the mechanic of the Finnish national cycling team. He has also been the president of Kälviän Tarmo and the vice-president of Keski-Pohjanmaa District Cycling Federation.
