At the start of his career cyclist Leopold Heuvelmans won several amateur races in his native Belgium, including the 1964 edition of the Tour de Liège. That same year Heuvelmans competed in the team time trial on the road and the team pursuit on the track at the Tokyo Olympics. Two of his brothers and his son were also amateur cyclists.
