Michael Hollingsworth would cycle to the Gillette factory where he worked in Victoria, Australia, using the nearby velodrome to race on. In the late 1950s Hollingsworth joined the Carnegie Caulfield Cycling Club in Melbourne, eventually earning a place on the Australian Olympic team. At the 1964 Games in Tokyo, he finished 14th in the individual road race, just 0.11 seconds behind the race winner. He then turned professional, riding in six editions of the Sun Tour and winning several stages.
