Louis Chauchat was a famous military engineer (graduated X’1883) who created the machine gun which bears his name and which was used by the French and American armies during World War I. The Americans nicknamed him “the King of Shooting” because in 1900 he won the “Military Pistol, National, Open” aka “King of Shooting, Pistol” event, cf. Bill Mallon’s book on 1900 Olympic Games. https://www.appl-lachaise.net/chauchat-louis-1863-1917
