In 1960 cyclist Dimitar Kotev won his first stage of the Tour of Bulgaria and represented his nation at the Roma Olympics. Throughout the decade Kotev continued to have success on home soil, winning the overall classification of the Tour of Bulgaria in 1961, along with the second and third stages of the race. Over the next few years he won 10 stages of his home race as well as the mountains classification at the 1966 edition. Kotev also had success abroad, winning two stages at the 1966 Tour of Turkey, followed by another two the next year and the overall classification of the race.
