Biography

István Liszkay started cycling in the colors of the МТС in 1929, and later continued at BSE, and from 1934 with Törekvés. He won his first big title at the age of 19, in 1931, when he won the Tour de Hongrie. In 1933 and 1934 Liszkay won the Hungarian championship in the individual road race, and in 1934 finished second in the Tour de Hongrie.

At the 1936 Berlin Olympics, avoiding the mass crash before the finish line, Liszkay finished 16th. As only two riders of the Hungarian team reached the finish line, they did not finish the team race. He also competed on the track and finished seventh in the team pursuit. In the same year Liszkay won the legendary Wien-Budapest-Wien race.

After the World War II, Liszkay started racing again in his 30s and in 1947 won the Tour de Hongrie (16 years between his two victories) and the Wien-Budapest-Wien race (11 years apart). After completing his sports career, he worked as a trainer for the Hungarian Cycling Association from 1948 to 1966, but continued riding until he was 80 years old.
