Biography

As a youth Bernard Mammes worked at his father’s ice cream parlor in Rockaway Park, Queens. Mammes served in World War II as a staff sergeant. After the war he returned to running Mammes’ Ice Cream, which he operated from May through September until he retired in 1968. Mammes also worked at Hegarty & Co. for 25 years. After retiring from full-time work, he worked part-time as a tour guide at Gateway National Park’s Breezy Point Unit at Riis Park for 23 years, until his death in 1998.
