Gamal Abdelnaser

As a freestyle, featherweight wrestler, Gamal Abdelnaser won his first major international medal for Egypt, bronze, at the 2018 African Championships. He repeated this success in 2019 and 2020, before winning gold in 2022 and silver in 2023. He also won gold at the 2023 African Games (held in 2024), having captured bronze in 2019 at that tournament. He was then selected to represent his country at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he placed 14th after losing his first bout to Puerto Rico’s Darian Toi Cruz.

Abdelnaser’s career abruptly ended in June 2026 when he died in police custody. Official reports claimed that he was a drug addict who experienced a heart attack after suffering from withdrawals in prison, having been arrested for drug trafficking. His friends, however, asserted that his body showed signs of torture and electrical shocks, which they believe led to his death.
