During the 1950s and 1960s Walter Moyano was one of the best cyclists in Uruguay. Moyano rode in a dozen editions of the Vuelta del Uruguay, winning the race on five occasions (1957, 1960, 1963, 1964, 1969), in addition to finishing as the runner-up four times. He repeated this success in the road race at the national championships, winning five titles (1957, 1960, 1963, 1965, 1969) and finishing second four times.
At major international competitions Moyano had mixed fortunes. In 1956 he was selected to compete in the road race at the Melbourne Olympics but did not finish the course. Three years later he and compatriots René Deceja and Rodolfo Rodino won bronze in the team road race at the Pan American Games in Chicago. In 2023 a cycling track in Maldonado was named after Moyano.
