In the 1970s Magne Orre became a four-time national cycling champion in Norway, winning the team time trial title on three occasions (1970, 1972–73) and the road race title in 1976. His consistent results in the former discipline earned Orre a place on the Olympic team for the 1972 and 1976 Games, with him captaining the team in Montréal. His best performance came at the München Games when the Norwegian quartet finished fifth. Towards the end of the decade Orre rode in three editions of the Peace Race, but he was forced to abandon in 1975 and 1976 due to serious crashes.
Following his cycling career Orre became a coach, with Steffen Kjærgaard and Lars Petter Nordhaug being amongst his students. His son Henrik was a noted chef who worked for the Norwegian Cycling Federation for a few years.
