Biography

Road cyclist Wolfgang Steinmayr had a long career racing as an amateur in Austria. He won the Tour of Austria four times in 1972-73 and 1975-76, and placed second at the prestigious Tour de l’Avenir (a Tour de France for amateurs and semi-professionals) in 1973 and 1974. Steinmayr was a top climber, winning the climbing category at the Tour of Austria in 1973 and 1975, and at the Tour de l’Avenir in 1974. Steinmayr participated in the road race at the 1972 München and 1976 Montréal Olympics, placing 55th and 27th respectively. By career, he ran his own insurance agent’s office.
