Biography

Giovanni Tonoli was an Italian road cyclist, known as a sprinter and an excellent rouleur. Raised in the Romagna region, he won 21 victories in one season while representing the Ciclisti Padovani Club. Tonoli raced the team time trial at the 1971 World Championships where Italy was a medal favorite, having won pre-world races at Berlin and München, but they finished off the podium. Tonoli won two medals at the 1971 Mediterranean Games, a gold in team pursuit, and a silver in the team time trial.

He raced the team time trial at the 1972 München Olympics, but Italy placed only ninth. Tonoli never turned professional. He became a mechanic for the Italian national team, but sadly died at only 46-years-old.
