Dennis Kemp grew up in Western Australia where he played Australian rules football before taking up hockey while at high school. Kemp played for the Perth Hockey Club and went on to represent Western Australian at both the under-18 and senior level, eventually going on to play for Australia. His international début came against New Zealand in 1954 in Sydney. Two years later he was selected to compete at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne. At the Olympic Games the Australian team finished in fifth place with Kemp playing the second-half of the play-off match against Great Britian in bare feet due to him having blisters.
In 1964 Kemp was made a life member of the Perth Hockey Club and the Floreat Park Ladies Hockey Club where he had coached and served as President. In 2000 he had the double honour of receiving the Australian Sport Medal for services to hockey and carrying the Olympic Torch in Perth prior to the Sydney Games.
