Biography

A Devonian Arthur Birkett was educated at Blundell’s School where he was in the cricket XI, and he later played for the Castle Cary club. Birkett opened the batting with captain Charles Beachcroft at the 1900 Olympics but scored just one in the first innings and did not bat in the second. Some sources say that Birkett was captain of the British team but most newspaper reports of the day say Beachcroft was the skipper. Birkett inherited the family wool merchants business on the death of his father in 1902.
