After winning a silver medal in 1912, John Sewell went on to win a gold medal in 1920. Like a number of his colleagues on the City of London Police Tug-of-War team, Sewell was also an accomplished wrestler. He was the British heavyweight champion in the Cumberland & Westmoreland style for four successive years from 1907 to 1910.
