Joseph Winston competed for the US tug-of-war team that finished fourth at the 1920 Antwerpen Olympics. Winston was in the US Army in 1920 where he was a sergeant stationed at Camp Stephen Little in Santa Cruz, Arizona. Winston also performed as a musician. His year of birth is often seen as 1883, because Winston lied about his age to join the Army. Along with William Penn, Winston was one of the early African-American Olympians for the US at the 1920 Olympics.
