Biography

David Archer made his début as the England goalkeeper against Wales in March 1954 and over the next five years won a total of 24 England and Great Britain caps. He played his club hockey for Polytechnic and was also a regular in the Middlesex county side.

Archer played in all six of Great Britain’s matches at the 1956 Olympics where they were beaten 3-1 by Germany in the bronze medal match. He narrowly missed out on selection for the 1960 Rome Olympics but was still named as one of the non-travelling reserves.

Archer compiled two histories of the Polytechnic Hockey Club marking their 50th and 75th anniversaries. Every year the club presents the David Archer Memorial Trophy to the men’s first XI Player of the Year.
