Biography

Southgate´s John Cadman made his international début for England against Scotland at Glasgow in 1960. A versatile forward he played centre-forward on that occasion.

Southgate was one of the many club sides Cadman played for. Others included Chelmsford, Saffron Walden, Beckenham, and Bury St. Edmunds. He was a playing for Bury when called up for the GB team at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics where he scored two goals in the 4-1 win over Zimbabwe, one of only two wins by Great Britain before elimination.

Cadman played county hockey for both Essex and Kent and was also a fine cricketer. He played Minor Counties cricket for Suffolk and in the 1966 Gillette Cup played against Kent, led by the England captain Colin Cowdrey.

Cadman later became a national hockey coach and in 1970 mooted the idea of a national hockey league, which eventually came to fruition in the 1971/72 season. He was appointed chief national coach and director of coaching. Between 1984-97 Cadman was coach to the Cambridge University team.
