Biography

When he was still at school Graham Evans was an excellent cricketer who was good enough to be on the books for Hampshire County Cricket Club. His parents, however, encouraged Evans to play field hockey when he went to study law at Southampton University. His hockey career began with Surbiton Hockey Club, with him going on to represent both Hampshire and Surrey, which saw him come to the attention of the national selectors.

Evans made his début for England in April 1967 in a match against Scotland at Hurlingham Park in West London. He played his first match for the Great Britain team later that same year, against West Germany at Lord’s Cricket Ground, with him scoring a goal. In 1972 Evans was part of Great Britain’s squad that competed at the München Olympics, where the team came sixth. He earned 14 caps for Great Britain and 44 caps for England, representing the latter at the 1973 World Cup and the 1974 European Nations Cup. Following his international career Evans joined Hounslow for the 1979–80 season where he later captained the first XI.
