On leaving Lancing, Sholto Marcon went up to Oriel College, Oxford, where he won a hockey blue as a freshman in 1910. He played against Cambridge for the next two years and was captain of the Oxford team in 1913. His father had been one of the pioneers of hockey at Oxford and was the founder of Marcon’s Hall. In 1913, Sholto Marcon made the first of his 23 appearances for England and in the early 1920’s the inside-forward trio of Marcon, Stanley Shoveller and A. Saville were virtually automatic choices for England. After war service, Marcon taught at Cranleigh until 1936 when he left to be ordained at the age of 46. He served as a chaplain in the RAF from 1943 to 1945 and later became the vicar of Tenterden.
