When he was young Austin Savage played football, rugby, and cricket, but his real talent was in field hockey, with him being capped for both Wales and Great Britain. When Savage was studying at Bangor University he tried out for the hockey team where he soon made the first team. From there he represented Caernarfonshire, Oxton Hockey Club, and Hightown Hockey Club. In 1962 Savage won his first international cap for Wales when he played against England at Edgbaston. By 1966 he had been selected to play for Great Britain on their six-week tour of Australia, playing in five matches.
Savage was unlucky to miss out on selection for the 1968 Mexico City Olympics but continued to play for Wales, including in a famous 3–1 win against England in 1970 in Bristol. With the Welsh team he toured throughout Europe and was part of their 1971 tour to Africa, which saw the team play in Rhodesia, Kenya, and Tanzania. The following year he finally made it to the Olympics, representing Great Britain at the 1972 München Games. In 1981 Savage played for Wales at a tournament in Kuala Lumpur where he won his 100th cap for the team. Outside of hockey he worked as a biology teacher for almost 30 years and was also a contributor to the BBC in Wales.
