The son of an American-born merchant, David Veit went to Bilton Grange Preparatory School, where he was head boy in 1952. He then went to Uppingham School before Brasenose College Oxford, where he became a hockey blue in 1960 and 1961.
After university, Veit played club hockey with Surbiton. He also played for London, Surrey, the Hockey Association, and England. In 1961 he toured South Africa with the Swallows, a combined Oxford and Cambridge University team, and in the winter in 1963/64 toured India and Ceylon (Sri Lanka) with Great Britain.
A forward, Veit was a member of the GB team at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. They failed to qualify for the classification round, after finishing fifth in their group with just two wins. Veit played in five of Britain´s six matches.
Merchant Banker Veit joined the Pearson Group in 1961 and went on to become managing director and between 1985-98 was the company president. His job took him to the United States, where he made his home, living in New York and then San Francisco. Veit was at one time a governor of The American Stock Exchange.
