Biography

Büdi Blunck was a German field hockey player who participated in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, when the re-unified German team won the final against Australia 2-1. Therefore, the team and all players were awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. In 1996, at Atlanta, the team again played Australia, but finished fourth after losing the bronze medal match 3-2.

In 1991, Blunck won the European Championships, and also won the Champions Trophy in 1991-92, and 1995. In total, he won 196 international caps (including 5 indoor) between 1989-98. In 1996, he was elected Hockey Player of the Year.

Blunck played domestically with Harvestehuder THC and won five national titles. He also became a sports journalist as a columnist for the Hamburger Morgenpost and Bild. He then went on to work as a co-commentator on German pay TV on Sport1 and Eurosport and other private pay TV channels, for hockey, football (soccer), and tennis events.

Beside his journalistic work, Blunck took over coaching at this home club several times. He also became president of Harvestehuder THC from 2007-09. He also managed the Strandhotel at Hamburg-Blankenese from 2000-08.
