Field hockey player Herbert Hobein was a member of the first German team to win an Olympic hockey medal, when they beat Belgium 3-0 to win the bronze medal at Amsterdam in 1928. He won five international caps between 1928-36. At club level he played for ETUF Essen.
His wife Gisela Hobein died in 2013 a few months after her 102nd birthday. Both contributed significantly to the rebuilding of the club ETUF Essen after World War II. Their children Helga, Dietmar, Almuth and Gudula also became field hockey players at club level.
