Biography

Theo Doyer played for the Dutch national team for well over a decade (1975-1988), playing 182 international matches and scoring 44 goals. During this period, he played in the 1978 World Cup final (lost to Pakistan), the final of the 1983 and 1987 European Championships (both won on penalties) and the 1981 Champions Trophy (won against Australia). In club competition he played for Bloemendaal his entire career, winning four Dutch titles (1986-89) and the European Cup in 1987. In the 1982 season, he also played in the Italian competition for Marilena (Roma) and won the national title. Doyer later became an a board member of his club Bloemendaal. He died aged 54, having suffered of Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS) for several years.
