Biography

Of the sixty international field hockey matches that Tom van Dijck appeared in for the Netherlands, the most important were the five that he played at the 1960 Rome Olympics. In the preliminary round, the Netherlands defeated New Zealand and Denmark, but lost to India and then lost a play-off game against New Zealand, failing to advance. The Netherlands then defeated France and Belgium in the classification round to place ninth overall; van Dijck was absent only for the game against France. He had been selected previously for the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, but the Dutch team withdrew from those Games to protest the Soviet Union’s actions in Hungary.

Domestically, he played for a time with Sportvereniging Kampong in Utrecht, before moving to Breda after obtaining his dentistry degree, re-joining Breda Hockey Vereniging Push at the age of 40. He later stayed active as a coach and referee with this club.

Used given name also regularly appears as "Thom", but Tom is the spelling used by this relatives in his obituary. Similarly, a year of birth of 1931 is regularly given, notably by Bijkerk's works on Dutch Olympians. Again, the family obituary here uses 1929, as does the Dutch Hockey federation's athlete database.
