The 1960 Olympic final was a rematch of the 1956 game. Pakistan’s win not only meant that country’s first ever Olympic gold, but also put an end to India’s unique winning streak. In seven Olympics, they had won 30 straight matches, scoring 197 goals and allowing only 8 (and never more than one in a match). In addition, they had never lost to Pakistan, although they had only played them twice. The final match was an exciting contest, with a sixth minute goal by Ahmed Naseer Bunda deciding the outcome. The bronze was surprisingly taken by Spain, which had never before made the semi-finals.

The tournament set-up, in which all placements were decided, was apparently disliked by several teams, as Germany, Poland and Denmark did not complete the matches for the places between 5th and 16th. In contrast, Australia played two extra matches. In a match for places 5 through 8, Australia and Kenya were tied after 40 minutes of extra time, when the match had to be suspended because of nightfall. The referee tossed a coin and awarded the match to Australia, which proceeded to win the 5th place game against New Zealand. A Kenyan protest was awarded by the jury of appeal, and a replay was ordered. The Australians won again, but also had to re-play New Zealand, this time losing 0-1.
