Paul Fishwick hated hockey when he first went to Newcastle-under-Lyme High School but eventually took up the sport and was converted from a winger to a goalkeeper. He continued playing the sport after going to Fitzwilliam House (now Fitzwilliam College), Cambridge, and won a Blue in 1959. He also played for his Battalion while doing his National Service with the Royal Army Service Corps (RASC).
After leaving University, Fishwick moved to Birmingham to work and joined the Harborne HC. He went on to win representative honours with Staffordshire, and The Midlands. He made his England début against Wales in 1960 and that year was reserve goalkeeper to Harry Cahill at the Roma Olympics. He went to the Tokyo Games four years later and shared the goalkeeping duties with Cahill, with each man playing three matches. Fishwick retired from international hockey after Tokyo but continued to play at club and county level.
