Kevin Percy

A New Zealand hockey international from 1955 to 1962, Kevin Percy played for the Kiwi Hockey Club and later played a key role in the formation of the Red Star club. He also coached Wairarapa in the latter stages of his playing career, the highlight of which was the 1960 Roma Olympics when he played centre-forward and helped New Zealand to their best ever Olympic placing at the time. They narrowly missed out on a place in the semi-finals after losing 1-0 to Spain in the quarters, the winning goal coming in the second period of extra time. The classification match for fifth/sixth place pitched New Zealand with Australia, and Percy made the crucial pass to Phil Bygrave to score the only goal of the game.

Percy also represented Wairarapa at cricket and basketball and many thought he was such a good cricketer that he should have played for Central Districts. He once scored a club record innings of 255. After moving to Napier in 1977, Percy ran an antiques shop.
