Biography

A hockey inside-forward or centre-forward, Stuart Mayes attended Caterham School and then St. John’s College, Cambridge to study engineering. He was a double hockey Blue in 1959 and 1960, and was selected for the Great Britain squad for the 1960 Olympics. Prior to going to the Roma Games, Mayes had played for Surrey, Eastern Counties, South of England, and made his full England international début against Wales in March 1960.

After a six-year absence from the international arena, Mayes was recalled to the England squad in 1967 to add to his tally of nine caps. In December 1970 it was announced that Mayes would be manager of the England team, but he resigned from the post 12 months later. Mayes played most of his club hockey with Cheam but joined Guildford later in his career and was still playing competitive hockey as he approached his mid-40s. By profession, Mayes worked as an engineer for a London firm before becoming a patent agent.
